Sometimes called a “suspended floral installation,” “hanging floral arrangement,” or “ceiling flowers,” this type of elevated floral design is one of our favorites to create. These statement designs make a lasting impact in wedding ceremonies and receptions, giving our eye a place to land in the space. In this post, I’ll show how we sustainably created a suspended floral installation for a head table at the Lieper’s Fork wedding venue, Cortina Farms.
This design includes materials ranging from zip ties to olive branches. Due to the harmful effects of floral foam, we always implement materials that we can use multiple times. We reuse all of the listed materials to this day, with the exception of zip ties!
Here is a list of everything we used for this design:
To start, we suspended the tree branch at waist level. Thankfully, this enabled us to easily reach the branch without needless strain. We affixed the chicken wire and extended it past either side of the branch in opposite directions to guide the design in a more organic shape.
After securing the branch, we began adding the greenery to the chicken wire. We cut the greenery to the necessary length as we went, shaping the design to our liking. We wanted it to feel natural and not buttoned up.
We put the stems into water picks so they could drink (it was a hot day!), and placed each flower in the design. The design really came to life after we added the flowers, and it was beautiful!
This floral installation was very heavy and required two people to hold up while a third person simultaneously fastened the fishing line to the beams above us.
If you look closely to the right, you can see a glimpse of the fishing line. It’s pretty incredible how strong such a thin material can be!
After securely fastening the design, we positioned four coordinating centerpieces on the head table. It was truly a statement design, and we had the best time creating it!
