“Which people need personal flowers?” is one of the first questions many of our couples ask us during the booking process. While we do think that the bride and groom should have personal flowers, technically, nobody actually needs or requires them! It’s a weird thing for a wedding florist to say, but it really is true.
Even though bridal party members traditionally have personal flowers, it’s totally okay to skip this if you don’t feel the need to include them. Sometimes, couples will forgo bridal party flowers so they can allocate that portion of their floral budget to a fuller ceremony feature, additional aisle flowers, or more candles.
There are so many options and variations, and you have the total freedom to choose what’s best for your wedding. We’re always here to share suggestions and ideas based on your unique needs.
Side note: For couples who simply want stunning personal flowers or don’t necessarily need our full-service custom design offering, we now provide à la carte floral design. Just select the designs you’d like, share your color palette, and we’ll take care of the rest!
Now that we’ve covered the fact that you don’t have to give your bridal party personal flowers, let’s get into who traditionally has them.
The bridal bouquet is inarguably the most beloved kind of personal flower design! This is a floral design that has a special opportunity to show off your personality and style while also accentuating your bridal gown. There are endless possibilities in every aspect from the ribbon color, length, and material to the shape and style of the bouquet.
Bridesmaids and the maid of honor usually carry bouquets that are similar in design to the bridal bouquet, but smaller in size. Lately, we’ve seen weddings where the bridesmaids will carry a bouquet of just a few stems. We’ve also seen bridesmaids carrying monochromatic bouquets that coordinate with their dress color as well as bouquets that are all one flower type.
Any man you want to highlight can have a boutonniere, and when we create the groom’s boutonniere, we make it slightly distinguished from the rest. The officiant, ringbearer, and ushers are also people who commonly have a boutonniere.
While real petals are an option, many flower girls will carry faux petals to avoid brown spots. Another great option is for them to carry a small posy.
We prefer to design posies over wrist corsages for mothers, grandmothers, and other women you want to honor with flowers. This is because corsages are fragile, bruising easily when bumped against surfaces or turning brown when out in the heat due to their short stems. Posies can also be set down when not in use and won’t cause skin irritation the way wrist corsages sometimes do.
We’re always here to offer personalized floral design ideas to help make your wedding day truly unforgettable. Reach out to us anytime to start planning your dream florals, and remember that just because your friend had 16 bridesmaids’ bouquets and 25 boutonnieres does not mean you should feel swayed into doing the same. Always do what’s best for you and your wedding needs!
